Northern essence

The mountainous region of Hungary is the essence of Hungary as visitors can find almost everything here that this Central European country can provide. The unique and often unspoilt nature - with all the mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and spacious meadows - offers numerous opportunities for total relaxation, active holidays and even extreme sports. You can hunt wild animals, catch fish and observe domestic animals, take photographs of rare animal and plant species.

Man has known this area since prehistoric times and has since created several valuable monuments of European and worldwide fame including churches, castles, palaces, residential buildings, treasures and works of art. The region is scattered with thermal springs providing relaxation for body and soul alike. The soil and climate of the region - excellent for vine cultivation - and the work and expertise of wine-makers jointly ensure the excellence of the most famous wines in the country, Egri Bikavér (‘Bull’s Blood of Eger’) and ‘Tokaji Aszú’.

The region offers innumerable unique values: the most ancient caves, the most famous castle, the longest cable lift, the northernmost villages, the best-known pilgrimage destination, the most colourful regional costume, the smallest and oldest settlements, the only natural cave bath, the climatic resort with the cleanest air and the largest number of protected birds in the country… and we will keep on listing the attractions on the following pages. It is no surprise that most of the UNESCO world heritage sights in Hungary are also located in this region.

The winter offer of the northern region has spectacularly expanded in the past few years: new ski facilities have opened and various events - like dog-sled races, horse-sleigh programs, colourful Christmas fairs or the annual jelly festival - all await visitors in this region even on the coldest days.

Local dishes are delicious. In many places the dishes invented by our predecessors are still prepared and served in the original manner. Local people like to eat well, which is proved by the large number of restaurants, offering varied culinary experiences to their guests. The hospitable locals await visitors with numerous accommodation facilities in authentic rural houses, pleasant family pensions and elegant hotels or castles.
